Lakes II: Amy joins us for the weekend, we (nearly) pull pints, and we ascend "Hell's Bells" (aka Helvellyn)

Morris Dancers

Amy!

Aquatic dog.

Squirrel Nutkin?

Stopping for refreshments at The Horse and Farrier Inn.

One of the waiters suggested we get a picture behind the bar. We were definitely not opposed to the idea.

You know, just been here since 1688 (year of the Glorious Revolution, btw).

A lot of landscape shots.

But the landscape deserved the attention.

Castlerigg Stone Circle.

They still don't really know why the circle was first built.

Several photographers had come to capture the Stone Circle at dusk. We went up to it anyway, because how often are we going to get to touch really old stones standing on end?

A little bit less high-tech than Stonehenge, but way cooler to be out there (almost) alone and around dusk.
There were a bizarre number of crows at one point, though you can only see one in this picture.

So cute, though a little shy, as I remember.

This is when we wished we all had electric torches/flashlights.

Time to climb the third highest fell in the Lake District!

Before: bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

It kept going up and up.

Can you find Amy and Andrea?

Get ready for a LOT of mountain pictures.

Find Amy and Andrea, take 2.

Into the cloud. Helvellyn bound. Hell's Bells isn't Helvellyn's real nickname, btw, I just forgot the fell's real name and called it Hell's Bells once (or twice? it turned into a joke).

Amy demonstrating Mountain Hair.

The woman who has mastered Mountain Hair has great power, apparently. At least in outdoor sporting good shops.

"The first aeroplane to land on a mountain in Great Britain did so on this spot on December 22nd, 1926. John Leeming and Bert Hinkler in an Avro 585 Cosport landed here and after a short stay flew back to Woodford."

I'll admit, I got a little spooked when I or anyone else went too near the edge.

Amy said that on the train back she read up on this spot, and she thought we wouldn't have stood so close to the edge if we'd known how steep/far the drop was.

Creepy fog/cloud shot.

Did we really make it?!

Hands in!

Selfie.

With all of Andrea, this time! Not one to criticize, though, as I'm not that gifted in the selfie department--possibly in part because (surprise!) I don't have the world's longest arms.

Hold on, Amy!

Time for more food!

Warming up again on the way down.

Sun piercing the cloud.

I liked all of these shots, so you get three for the price of one.

[obligatory reference to "The Road Less Traveled"--I really do like that poem, though!]

After.
